The Omnivore's Hundred

Oooh look, a new post! Excellent!

Don't get too excited just yet... since I've spent the better part of the day lying on an orthopedic pillow icing my neck and upper back (thank you, mutinous trapezius), a meme is about all the creativity I can muster at the moment.

This one's fitting for me, though, since I've spent much of the last couple of months changing my eating habits, reading about the industrialization of the food chain and the development of our counter-intuitive Western Diet, and re-thinking my whole concept of food and what part it plays in my life.

Why yes, there will be more posts about that in the future.

But for now, I've picked up this meme from Andrew Wheeler over at  Very Good Taste:

Here’s a chance for a little interactivity for all the bloggers out there. Below is a list of 100 things that I think every good omnivore should have tried at least once in their life. The list includes fine food, strange food, everyday food and even some pretty bad food - but a good omnivore should really try it all. Don’t worry if you haven’t, mind you; neither have I, though I’ll be sure to work on it. Don’t worry if you don’t recognise everything in the hundred, either; Wikipedia has the answers.

Here’s what I want you to do:

1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment here at www.verygoodtaste.co.uk linking to your results.

The VGT Omnivore’s Hundred:

Whereas the list of memories got easier as I went along, this definitely got harder. I hit a brief streak of inspiration yesterday with all of the travel (thanks, BBC), but I really grappled with the last twenty or so.

What's on your list?

Happy Happy

They say it's your birthday
Well it's my birthday too, yeah

Yes, it is my birthday. My first annual 29th birthday, to be precise. Fortunately my company was nice enough to throw me an expensive party hold its Summer Extravaganza last night so I've gotten a good head start on the celebrating already *g*.

I am also the only member of my department to have made it to work today. Awesome. Happy Birthday to me.

Since today is all about ME, how about a meme that I found over at Blogography?

Things You Don't Usually Tell Anyone About, like...

...a strange combination of food you like to snack on
. Pickles wrapped in cheese slices.

...something you do that other bloggers who read you might find odd if they saw you doing it. Sing.

...when you were 7, what you wanted to be when you grew up - that you never told anyone about. I wanted to be a marine biologist, but I've told plenty of people about it.

...the thing you don't tell people at work about yourself. That I have a blog. ;-)

...what you like to do when no one else is going to be home for a stretch of time. I live alone at the moment so, everything! But when I am co-habitating, I only like to clean when the other person is gone. I have no idea why.

...the thing you believe - politically - that you don't admit to people who think you think like they do. My fiscal politics are far, far more conservative than most people realize. At this point, I've grown away from both the Republican and Democratic parties and consider myself more a Libertarian than anything else.

...that one thing from your childhood, outside of your parents, that you try to maintain some kind of connection with, and how. I keep my stuffed bear (True Teddy) and the first toy I ever bought for myself(a Pound Puppy named Mr. Peabody) in my bedroom closet. Seeing them each morning makes me happy.

...a song or group or singer you secretly like that everyone else groans about. Oh I have lots of groan-worthy music on my iPod... I have a weakness for bubble gum pop. It makes me happy and it's great for running and cleaning :-)

...do you close the bathroom door when you're the only one home? Yes, because if the door is open you can see into the bathroom from the living room windows.

BlogMe

I'm not going to the BlogHer conference this year, but I've still been tagged to participate in the BlogMe online mixer. I should have answered these questions on Monday but, well, I'm lame.

BlogMe

1. When did you start blogging and why?
I started keeping a website in 1995. It started out as a project for a web development class and then progressed to a hobby. I've kept an online journal of some sort since then (before the advent of "blogs" *gasp*), but it was always part of a larger personal website. Three years ago I gave up my previous URL, overhauled my website's design, scrapped all of the extraneous personal crap, and focused on creating a formal, public blog.

2. Who do you read every day, rain or shine?
I have all of the "Clever Blogs" listed at the left grouped into one RSS feed which I check at least once daily.

3. How would you describe your writing style?
Conversational, but not "lazy." I believe firmly in the power of punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar.

4. What don’t you write about? Anything considered a no-no in your book?
I don't write about my job except in very general terms (I'm not really interested in getting dooced) and I don't write about anything that could be potentially embarassing and/or damaging to my friends and family. I'll embarass myself no end, but not the people I love. Because of that, I also use pseudonyms for everyone mentioned in my blog unless I have specific permission to use a name.

5. How do you feel about meeting bloggers in real life?
I think it's only slightly less of a crapshoot than online dating, but so far I've been quite lucky. Several of my current "real life" friends started out as blogger buddies.

6. Have you written anything controversial? Is blogging controversial?
Anytime people are given the opportunity to express differing opinions in a public forum, there will be controversy.

My post about Scientology brings the highest number of random visitors to my site (apparently a lot of people are searching Google for "I hate Scientology" these days) and it never fails to stir up an email or two. My more recent post about gas prices is also a favorite amongst the volatile masses.

7. Are you and your blogging persona the same person?
I write as myself and my blog reflects a portion of my life, but not the entirety of it. My favorite line from the Blogger's Disclaimer is one that I wish more people would remember: Do not assume that you know everything there is to know about a writer simply because you read their weblog on a regular basis. Any judgements you make will be based on the information they have provided you about themselves, which is probably vague, incomplete or embellished.

8. Have you ever anonymously posted on a site to flame them? Never; anonymous posting is cowardly and flaming is a waste of time and energy.

I feel so... mixed!

Meme-ology

Still not quite back to the land of the living yet, but I'm close... so how about a meme that I stole from Kevin, Dave, and countless others?

Grub-ology:

  • What is your salad dressing of choice?
Totally depends on the contents of the salad, but I generally default to Balsamic Vinaigrette.
  • What is your favorite fast food restaurant?
Hmm, probably Quiznos or Baja Fresh.
  • What is your favorite sit down restaurant?
I can't possibly pick just one!
  • On average, what size tip do you leave at a restaurant?
20-30%. If the service is bad, however, I will leave an intentionally small tip and speak to the manager. I'm not a total bitch, though - I'll speak to a manager about superior service, too.
  • What food could you eat every day for two weeks and not get sick of?
Well I've been eating yogurt and applesauce for four days and I'm not sick of it yet...
  • Name three foods you detest above all others.
Octopus, organ meats of any kind.
  • What is your favorite dish to order in a Chinese restaurant?
Chicken in Black Bean Sauce, or Mongolian Beef.
  • What are your pizza toppings of choice?
    Sausage, mushroom, garlic, extra cheese.
  • What do you like to put on your toast?
    Butter & jam.
  • What is your favorite type of gum?
    Trident Peppermint.

4. Who was the last new person you met?
The Dolphin's girlfriend, last night. (She's lovely)

Hmmm. It's been awhile since I got a new toy, but I'm getting one next week!

Passive Aggressive Catharsis

As spotted on Kathleen's Blog:

List up to ten (10) things you want to say to ten (10) different people. Do not state who these people are. Do not confirm or deny any ‘comment speculation’.

  1. You're the only one who can't see what she's doing to you.
  2. I wish I had the words to express how blessed I feel to have you in my life.
  3. Sometimes, you're just too much for me. It's exhausting.
  4. Though I smile and say all the right things, deep down I don't believe you're happy.
  5. Why can't you just get over it already?
  6. Every day, I strive to live up to your standards.
  7. The memory of our first kiss will be with me forever.
  8. I was too afraid to accept your invitation at the time; I'm sorry I've missed my chance.
  9. I am not an idiot. Stop treating me like one.
  10. I lied.

That is cathartic.

100 Things

The 100 Things meme has been circling again, so I thought I'd take a stab at it. The first twenty are from the 20 Things meme that chowyunsmut made me do in October, but the next eighty (!) are all new.

1) My great grandmother, grandmother, mother and I are all exactly 30 years apart in age.

2) I adore thunderstorms and love to stand outside and watch them unfold.

3) I love to crochet and last year made ALL of my holiday gifts. For some reason, people are usually very surprised to learn this about me.

4) Just to balance out the crocheting... I can also fell a tree in under 20 minutes using only an axe (so can Firebug, incidentally. We're good people to know when you're lost in the woods.)

5) I rode competetively from age 6 until age 14 when an (unrelated) knee injury kept me off a horse for a year. I never went back.

6) My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving.

7) I'm really vain about my hair. I think it's a Leo thing.

8) I believe in ghosts. With good reason.

9) When I was little, I had a gender-confused rabbit named Bonnie-Bob. (We thought he was a she. He turned out to be a he. I thought it was mean to name a boy "Bonnie" and so tacked on the "Bob" to make him feel better)

10) I used to walk Bonnie-Bob around the yard on a little red leash. He loved that.

11) When I was growing up, my Father would give me a flat of pansies every year for Easter which we would then plant in my garden. I fully intend to continue this tradition with my own children.

12) I'm looking forward to raising a family.

13) Tattooing is a very spiritual act for me and all of mine are deeply meaningful to me. I really don't understand people who get tattoos of random things just because it's "cool."

14) I always keep my toes well pedicured. It makes me feel more feminine.

15) I think that my ass, wide though it may be, looks damn good in jeans.

16) Someday, I want to learn how to bellydance.

17) I'm neither a morning nor a night person... I can be either, depending on the situation.

18) Music, all music, moves me in a very primal, visceral way. I'm wary of people who can't be moved by it.

19) When I was in middle school, I wanted to be a Marine Biologist when I grew up.

20) I give really great massages. I learned part of my massage technique from a friend who is an Undertaker - he explained to me how they work the embalming fluids through bodies and how that relates to soothing the muscles of people who are still alive.

Mondo Beyondo

At the end of 2004, the ever-inspiring Andrea of Superhero Designs wrote about the Mondo Beyondo list. She describes it as:

This is the list of things that are outrageous, wild, and may not even happen for 5 or 10 years from now. This is the list of things that are SO JUICY and unlikely to happen that you are afraid to even write them down.
And she goes on to explain
The great thing about these lists is that you don't need to believe they will happen as you write them. Simply the act of writing is a show of faith... even if you're thinking "yeah, right" as you jot them down. You will be amazed by your ability to manifest. You will astound yourself with what you can create by putting pen to paper.
I didn't do one last year because I couldn't think of any dreams that big.

Tells you what kind of mental state I was in last December, doesn't it?

This year, I'm making that list:

Mondo Beyondo 2006
In no particular order...

  • Attend the opening of a movie I've written.
  • Raise a family.
  • Dive the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Start a production company.
  • Show my photographs in a gallery.
  • Buy a house.
I've decided to title 2006 The Year of Fearless Completion. The name of the game this year is follow through; the first step towards manifesting all my dreams.

5 Weird Habits of Yours

This reminds me a bit of the idiosyncrasies meme that was going around few months ago...

Ground Rules: The first player of this game starts with the topic 5 Weird Habits of Yours; people who get tagged then write blog entry about their 5 quirky habits as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose the next 5 people to be tagged and list their names.

1. I count things near-constantly but I'm barely aware of it. Every so often I'll catch myself counting floor tiles, or steps to the car, or similar and I'm always surprised that I'm doing it.
2. I read my daily websites (blogs, news outlets, etc) in a specific order.
3. When I'm pensive, I rub my lips and chin with the index, middle, and ring fingers of my left hand.
4. I tie scarves, sashes, bandanas, ribbons, and belts with a square knot. Always.
5. I comb my hair in the shower, after I've put in the conditioner. It's a holdover from having very long hair and not wanting to break it by combing out the knots when it's dry.

I'm going to buck the rules, though, and not tag anyone. Play, or don't. Let anarchy reign!

Top 20

I stole this fun meme from Kathleen:

It's the one where you take your complete playlist, hit shuffle, then post your favorite lyric from each of the first twenty songs - whether they are embarrassing to you not - and then people guess them in the comments section. Since my musical taste is all over the place, I could be very embarrassed. I will add the artists to the main post as they're guessed.
I must admit, I did skip the instrumental songs:

01. Crash and burn we all fall down and I can still hear the sound of love, run
     dry.

     -Exit to Exit, Ryan Cabrera

02. I'll kick you out of my home if you don't cut that hair
-Fight For Your Right, Beastie Boys

03. I find sometimes it's easy to be myself, sometimes I find it's better to be
     somebody else

-So Much To Say, Dave Matthews Band

04. King of the world with a pool cue in his hand
     -Fleet Footed Dan, Chris Orbach

05. I go to my oracle, ask her for a miracle, she smiles a glassy smile and she
says join me on this mountain here, set aside your fears and open up
     your ears

     -Oracle, Pacific Allstars

06. Well I guess I should be goin' / I sure found out too much to stay / Please
don't say your sorry / I might wait another day

07. I seen her children crying / As the police tore apart their home / And no
they didn't need a reason / It's what your votes condone

08. In this life, I strive for improvement / Be your own guide, follow your own
     movement

09. You ain't nothing to me if you got nothing to say

10. I believe that my life's gonna see the love I give return to me

11. We don't need no special occasion. so come on it's a celebration

12. So much water under the bridge, and I'm standing here at the water's edge
     looking into your eyes

13. Memo to myself: do the dumb things I gotta do
-Inside the Puppet's Head, They Might Be Giants

14. Its like a long, cold walk in a winter beach, Love is a game you
cannot teach, when it comes to love Im in need of advice

15. It's just you against your tattered libido, the bank and the mortician,
forever man and it wouldn't be luck if you could get out of life alive

16. Well listen man I ain't goin' to school no more it starts much, much too early
     for me

17. Darling, I know you'll be there to relieve me, the love you give to me will
     free me

-Sexual Healing, Ben Harper's version (in this case)

18. There's no light at the end of the tunnel tonight, just a bridge that I gotta
     burn

     -Gone, Kelly Clarkson

19. Your angels speak with jilted tongues / The serpent's tale has come undone
you have no strength to squander

20. I'll be stuck fixated on one star when the world is crashing down

September has ended and it is time to wake up. In the song, Green Day says that 7 years have gone so fast. Seven years ago, it was Fall 1998. Take this quiz, post the results, and see how much things have changed since then:
