Note to Self

Note: Agreeing to have "just one drink" with the Utility Department* after working 40+ hours over three days is never a good idea.

So, I've survived the Golden Globes (but 8am sure did come early this morning). Four more shows to go in this mad, mad season! Updates will continue to be be spotty for awhile... the last hinge on my PowerBook finally gave out so I have no computer at home and no free time on my computer at work. It balances out, though, because the reward for working all of these crazy hours is that I'll earn enough in OT to buy myself a new computer!

Unless the government takes it all away in taxes. Bastards.

_____
*One of the hardest working departments in television, Utilities are responsible for doing everything to get the cameras & monitors set-up and functioning properly. They work their asses off and are notorious for showing the same level of enthusiasm towards their free time.

Oh Em Gee

Superheroes fill a gap in the pop culture psyche, similar to the role of Greek mythology. There isn't really anything else that does the job in modern terms. For me, Batman is the one that can most clearly be taken seriously. He's not from another planet, or filled with radioactive gunk. I mean, Superman is essentially a god, but Batman is more like Hercules: he's a human being, very flawed, and bridges the divide. -Christopher Nolan

Is it 2008 yet?

Heath Ledger to play Joker in The Dark Knight.

Two of my favorite actors in one film from my favorite superhero franchise? Woohoo!

Again, Christopher Nolan says it best:

Our challenge in casting the Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale's Batman is going to be incredible.

Spamoetry

This bit of spamoetry arrived in my mailbox this morning:

To: Amandarin
From: Menachem Golan
Subject: naeouu

nothing, and in the South there was no sign of the dragon, but there was a gathering of very many birds. At that they gazed and wondered; but they were no nearer understanding it, when the first cold stars came out.

How fortuitous! I was just saying the other day that aren't enough Israeli actors sending me excerpts from The Hobbit...

Answer The Phone

One of the worst things about upgrading your technology is getting used to the peculiarities of your new gadget. For the first week that I have a new phone, or computer, or whatever I feel like a Geek Neophyte - I can barely figure out the most basic of functions, never mind the complex stuff.

This afternoon, a cellphone started ringing incessantly near my desk. It rang a few times, made a weird chirping noise and then was silent for a moment before the whole cycle started over again. It was so irritating that my co-workers and I were grousing loudly in the hopes that whoever owned the phone would DO something about it.

It took me far too long to realize that the phone riging was, in fact, mine.

*facepalm*

At least it's shiny.

Don't call me, I'll call you

Oooh, shiny.

After a whopping 30% discount (thank you, awesome job), I should have it by the middle of next week.

Yay for new gadgets!

Let's hope that this one doesn't have a surprise disco light.

Geek0210

I can't decide if last night was a terribly geeky night for me, or a terribly L.A. one...

  • Saw the midnight show of X-Men 3: The Last Stand. +5 Geek
  • Saw it at the Mann Chinese Theater in Hollywood. +5 L.A.
  • Took someone who had never been to the Mann Chinese, in spite of living in Los Angeles for 7 years. +3 L.A.
  • Arrived 90 minutes before the film started. +3 Geek
  • Blamed early arrival on wanting to allow time for "traffic" and "parking." +2 L.A.
  • Did not go in costume. -1 Geek
  • Could identify (by both real name and mutant nickname) 95% of the people who did arrive in costume +7 Geek
  • Poked myself in the eye with my straw while attempting to take a sip of Diet Coke. Dork Penalty. Lose 2 Geek points and 5 LA points
  • Sat behind Courtney Love* and her entourage +10 L.A.
  • Swapped stories with Noise Boy about various entertainment projects we've worked on: +7 L.A.
  • Was almost as excited to see the Superman & Pirates previews as I was to see the movie. +3 Geek
  • Successfully played "name that mutant cameo" during the movie. +10 Geek
  • Stayed until the end of the credits and cheered appropriately. +2 Geek
  • Spent a few minutes wandering around after the movie, showing Noise Boy some of the best handprints & footprints. +5 L.A.

Final tally: Equal parts Geek (27) and Los Angeles (27).

That sounds about right.

Calling all (Star Trek) Geeks

Where No Auction Has Gone Before

A massive auction of Star Trek props, costumes, models and Vulcan tapestry culled direct from Paramount's studio vaults was announced Thursday by Christie's in New York. Though billed as a 40th anniversary event, the sale, to be held Oct. 5-7, will feature less of the 40-year-old variety Starfleet stuff, and more of the Next Generation and beyond variety brands.

I so need a Vulcan Tapestry for my living room. I mean, doesn't everyone?

Not that we'll have the chance to get them... I'm sure Tony Alleyne will beat us to all the good stuff.

Tradition

About a month after I met Boy 2, he left town for a few months to work on the Olympics. Though we'd only known each other a short while I basically took care of his life while he was away - watched his house, watered his plants, payed his bills (with his money, of course). To thank me, he bought me my very first DVD player.

Since then he's been responsible for most of my entertainment electronics both directly (by purchasing them for me as gifts) and indirectly (by being the devil on my shoulder and luring me into purchasing fun gadgets). It's become somewhat of a tradition.

That first DVD player worked like a champ for three and a half years until it mysteriously broke two days before I moved out of my apartment. I was sad to see it go. Not only because I couldn't watch movies any more, but also because it was symbolic of the beginning of my friendship with Boy 2 - now one of my closest and dearest friends.

Well... Boy 2's going out on tour for a few months and I'm taking care of some things while he's away. What did be buy me to say thank you? A new DVD player, of course.

It's good to have traditions.

Best. Girlfriend. Evar.

I have just purchased the most fantastic Christmas gift for my beloved Apollo. The most fantastic I tell you!

Now, here's hoping that it actually gets delivered before Sunday. *crosses fingers*

Back to the Dark Ages

Once again, I am without internet access at home.

It's not Charter's fault... oh no... it's because my *#&*$^%!* power cord frayed / shorted out / started making weird clicking noises and I won't have time to grudgingly shell out $79 replace it until sometime this weekend.

*grumbles*
